MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN WANT TO GO TO VENUS

NEW SURVEY SHOWS EUROPEAN WOMEN THINK ABOUT HOLIDAYS AS MUCH AS SEX

A new survey* by leading hotel and leisure specialist, lastminute.com, has found that European women think about going away on holiday as much as they think about sex.

The representative survey of over 7,200 respondents across the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Ireland and Germany found that in a typical day, women think about holidays on average 1.38 times – almost the exact number of times they think about the act of love (1.36 times per day).

Perhaps surprisingly women in the warmer, sultry climes of Spain and Italy admitted to thinking about holidays more than sex in an average day while British and Irish women proved themselves to be the most lustful.

Number of daily thoughts about holidays (Women) Number of daily thoughts about sex (Women)
Spain (1.75) Ireland (1.73)
Italy (1.63) UK (1.40)
Ireland (1.51) Europe average (1.36)
Europe average (1.38) Germany (1.32)
Germany (1.29) Italy (1.32)
France (1.12) Spain (1.23)
UK (1) France (1.18)

By contrast, men tend to spend a lot more head space thinking about sex. On average, European men think about desires of the flesh 4.3 times a day while the desire to get away registers less on their radar: for every one moment of holiday-dreaming, they have three lustful thoughts.

Number of daily thoughts about holidays (Men) Number of daily thoughts about sex (Men)
Ireland (1.79) UK (5.8)
Spain (1.69) Ireland (5.48)
France (1.52) Europe average (4.30)
Germany (1.47) Germany (4.29)
Europe average (1.46) Spain (3.92)
Italy (1.30) France (3.26)
UK (1) Italy (3.05)

Mark Maddock, Managing Director of lastminute.com UK and Ireland says “We had rather a lot of fun with this survey. Anecdotally, we know people like to spend time thinking about getting away on a great holiday or city break but we wondered how this stacked up against carnal thoughts. Our findings revealed that, for women, holidays and sex are neck and neck. As for men, the old cliché still stands: some things never change! But whatever you like to think of: there’s research that shows that little day dream always is a great way of relaxation.”

Of the countries surveyed, the country that claimed to think about holidays the most is Spain with Spanish men and women thinking about a getaway on average 1.72 times a day. Perhaps surprisingly because of its run of dismal weather recently, the UK came bottom of the list with Brits thinking about a holiday on average just once a day – but come in second when thinking about the hot stuff they can do at home (3.60).

Overall, the Irish proved to be the most red-blooded, thinking about sex on average 3.68 times a day. Conversely, the so-called amorous French and Latin lovers in Italy admit to spending the least time thinking about sex averaging just 2.19 times a day.

Country most likely to think about holidays Country most likely to think about sex
Spain (1.72) Ireland (3.68)
Ireland (1.65) UK (3.60)
Italy (1.47) Germany (2.86)
Europe average (1.42) Europe average (2.86)
Germany (1.38) Spain (2.59)

THE GREAT BRAIN GAIN

LASTMINUTE.COM REPORT REVEALS OUR BRAINS ARE FOUR TIMES FASTER THAN A GENERATION AGO

Today’s hectic lifestyle and advancements in modern technology have caused the brain to develop and work four times faster than a generation ago, according to new research¹ commissioned by lastminute.com and brain development specialist, Dr David Lewis.

lastminute.com’s ‘Living Life at the Last Minute’ report reveals that life is speeding up, as almost three quarters of Britons (74%) admit that their lives have become more fast-paced over the past 10 years – with everything from speech to decision making being affected.

Just over half of those surveyed (51%) also admit that the hustle and bustle of everyday life has led to them becoming expert multi-taskers, with many having to juggle work, social and everyday activities all at the same time.

According to neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis, it is this increased demand on the brain and the need to quickly process information that has caused it to adapt to the 21st Century way of life. He comments, “Our brains have had to adapt to modern life over the past decade, they’ve developed into a parallel structure rather than a sequential one. This means we can think about, and process, more than one piece of information at any given time rather than just being able to focus on one after another.”

“Research strongly suggests that digital experiences have changed the structure of the brain and, in turn, affected the way we think and digest information – it has changed the cognitive process and, as such, caused the brain’s synapses to change to help deal with modern day life.”

“We’re now, more than ever before, making instant judgements. Long gone are the days when you had four minutes to create an impression on someone you’ve just met.  In the digital age you’ve, at best, one hundredth of a second to make an impression.”

Women appear to be adapting to modern lifestyle at a faster rate than men – just under two thirds (62%) find themselves successfully juggling more than one task, compared to less than half (40%) of men.

A new tech savvy generation is born

Two-thirds of those surveyed (66%) attribute the advancements in modern technology, the introduction of smart phones and portable tablets as the catalyst to their ever-increasing 24-hour lifestyle.  And, just under half (44%) believe social networking sites, such as Facebook and twitter have played a huge factor in influencing the pace at which they live their lives.

These factors have, according to Dr David Lewis, spawned a new generation of thinkers – know as the Digital Natives.  David comments, “People raised within a digital age think differently from previous generations. They develop hypertext minds that leap around. Digital Natives are more visually literate and can process images and things they see more rapidly, compared to their older counterparts.  You only need to look at the average scene length of modern day movies to see how fast our brains are working. Forty years ago the average scene length was a good few minutes long and allowed the brain to slowly process the information in sequence. Nowadays, scene lengths are much shorter – this chopping and changing is a great reflection of the how the brain of Digital Natives processes information.”

Life in the fast lane

It’s not just the brain that has been affected by living life at the last minute. Almost a third (30%) of Brits say they are eating faster than they used to two years ago and just over a quarter (26%) admit they work and type at a much faster pace.  Research also shows that Digital Natives are able to type at a quicker pace, some faster than trained court stenographers.

Language and the way in which we speak is also evolving with at least one in 10 (12%) Brits now find that they are talking faster than they were two years ago. Text language is also becoming an ever increasing part of our modern vocabulary and this is, according to Dr David Lewis, just another side-effect of living hectic lifestyles and the desire to get the message across as quickly as possible.

A nation of ‘last minute-ers’

As we are bombarded by a constant stream of tasks, activities and endless invitations, many of us admit to leaving more and more things to the last minute2. Sending birthday cards tops almost half (44%) of Britons’ lists of tasks left to the last minute, followed closely by cleaning the house (43%).  Worryingly, just under half of Brits (47%) leave paying their bills, or renewing their insurance policies, until the very last minute.

Mark Maddock, Managing Director at lastminute.com says, “Rushing around and juggling more than one task at any given time is just a by-product of our busy lives. Advancements in technology now mean that we’re contactable by email or telephone 24 hours a day – we’re now living in limitless society and it comes as no surprise that lastminuteness is becoming a modern day trait. Despite our hectic lives, one thing is certain though, holidays still remain a right and not a privilege for Brits and at lastminute.com we’re committed to offering our customers the very best holidays, at great prices, right up until the very last minute.”

Neurotrash

The report also found that living a fast-paced life is causing Brits added stress.  Over third of Brits (36%) admit they feel ‘panicky’ when they think about doing things at the last minute and just over two fifths (42%) found that they were  more likely to forget to do things if didn’t action them straight away.

THE GREAT GETAWAY WINDOW (OF OPPORTUNITY…)

Savvy Brits save up to 13% off the cost of their holidays by booking at the last minute

Our hectic lifestyles and somewhat tightened purse strings are causing us to become expert planners – and expert savers – when it comes to booking our big get-away according to new research* released today.

lastminute.com’s ‘Living Life at the Last Minute’ report reveals that over three-quarters of Britons1 (83%) tend to plan their annual holiday, and book the time of work, up to a year in advance yet leave booking the nuts and bolts of their getaways until the last minute.

Almost a quarter1 (23%) of savvy UK travellers admit to not booking at least one element of their holiday, such as flights or accommodation, until  a month or less before they jet off – and by doing so they’re saving themselves a significant amount of money in the process.

lastminute.com booking data* shows that the average cost of a holiday for two, to one of its top three best-selling sunshine resorts, would cost just over £1,100 when booked six months in advance, compared to just £980 when booked with just a few weeks to go – a saving of just over 11%.

Savings made when booking a last minute getaway to one of lastminute.com’s Top Three sunshine destinations

Destination

(Top three sunshine resort)

Advanced booking Last minute booking % Saving
Sharm El Sheikh £1,338.27 £1190.79 12%
Tenerife £968.33 £912 6%
Lanzarote £993.99 £865.11 13%
Average £1,100.19 £989.30 11%

Mark Maddock, Managing Director of lastminute.com UK and Ireland said, ‘It’s really interesting to see just how many travellers are holding off booking elements of their holiday until the last minute.  Savvy travellers know that some of the best deals can often be found when booking at the drop of the hat so advance holiday booking isn’t always such a big worry for Britons as it may have been in the past.

“Moreover, this year, more than any other year in recent times is a year of uncertainty in terms of getting away. One thing is certain though, our holidays are a right and not a privilege and we are committed to offering the very best at great prices right up until the very last minute.”

The ‘Living Life at the Last Minute’ report also looked at the relationship between the holiday booking window, cost and stress levels.

Surprisingly, booking a holiday at the very last minute doesn’t seem to stress out travellers. In fact, almost one in five (19%) admit that booking their holiday at the last minute makes them enjoy their break more than they would have done if they’d planned and booked months in advance.

When it comes to added cost, it seems that being super organised can prove to be rather expensive. Just under a fifth (16%) of UK travellers admit they end up buying more holiday supplies in anticipation the longer they have between booking and leaving for holiday – proving that it is, again, worth leaving things a little more to the last minute.

SOCIAL GAZUMPING IS NEW SOCIAL PHENOMENA

SOCIAL GAZUMPING IS NEW SOCIAL PHENOMENA

lastminute.com report reveals Brits willing to drop friends & family for a better social life

A new trend has emerged. The act of ‘social gazumping’ – letting down your friends, family or work mates in favour of a better offer is becoming more and more popular among busy working Britons according to new research, commissioned by lastminute.com, out today.

Meet the gazumpers

This emerging trend is just one of the findings from the ‘Living Life at the Last Minute’ report by lastminute.com, which revealed that nearly half (43%) of Britons admit to cancelling on someone at the drop of a hat when a better offer presents itself. What’s more, two thirds (65%) of those who cancel plans are guilty of being ‘socialiars’ – lying about our new plans in order to get out of a prior social engagement.

You’ve been gazumped

Colleagues are most likely to be ‘gazumped’ as 4 out of 10 (38%) of those that cancel plans for a better offer admit to cancelling on work mates. Almost a quarter (23%) admit to ditching parents or in-laws in favour of a better offer whilst almost one in ten (9%) admit to dumping friends and family for a date.

‘Planned spontaneity’ popular amongst Britons

When planning our social lives, a quarter (23%) of us like to keep all or most of our evenings free at the beginning of the week, with as many (22%) going as far as to set aside time for spontaneous, last minute activity at least once a week.

In addition, a sixth (16%) of Britons prefer to leave making weekend plans until the day before or on the day. Women tend to be more organised when it comes to their social lives than men; the majority (84%) of women keep a record of social engagements whilst less than two thirds (63%) of men do so.

A nation of ‘serial socialisers’

Living life in the fast lane means that our attitudes to making plans are changing. One in seven (14%) of Brits are being dubbed ‘serial socialisers’ as they have chosen to cram 2 or 3 events into just one night for the fear of letting someone down.

TV psychologist, Dr Linda Papadopoulos comments, “Social gazumping and serial socialising are reflections of a number of human traits; a fear of missing out on the fun, guilt associated with saying no to invitations and a selfish desire to spend our precious time doing exactly what we want. Ultimately, the feeling that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence is also a very powerful catalyst. Our preference to leaving gaps in our social plans so that we can act spontaneously is linked to our sense of adventure – having less build up before social events often adds to the excitement factor on the night. We may live in recessionary times but social currency is strong.”

Mark Maddock, Managing Director for lastminute.com UK and Ireland says, “At lastminute.com we have seen people become more impulsive as they are likely to take up fun activities and make new plans nearer the time. It seems at once a product of the fast-paced nature of our lives but also the fact that we are much more socially mobile. There are also some fantastic deals to be had by holding off on plans, from theatre seats to city breaks and restaurant bookings, which means that those of us who wait to make decisions at the last minute don’t have to be penalised financially.”

2012: A Royal Year

2012: A Royal Year

Explore some of Great Britain’s Royal towns

2012 is set to be a big year for the Royals. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will celebrate their first wedding anniversary in April and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in June.

lastminute.com, the UK’s largest online hotel, travel and leisure specialist, invites you to join in the celebrations and explore some of the UK’s beautiful Royal towns and counties, all fortunate enough to be granted the royal seal of approval.
